Train the Trainer Program: Online Course on Play Therapy
As part of the Train the Trainer Program, Project SOAR delivered an online course on Play Therapy, introducing participants to the theory, skills, and practical application of this approach in group work. The course was designed to equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to support children in a safe, structured, and child-centred way.
The course introduced the core concepts of Play Therapy, helping participants understand how play can serve as a natural and meaningful way for children to express emotions, share experiences, and build relationships. The theoretical component also emphasised the importance of building trusting relationships, so that children feel safe, respected, and free to engage at their own pace. Participants learned how to become group facilitators, including how to observe and listen to children’s needs, respond sensitively, and help create an emotionally safe space within the group.
In addition to theory, the course focused on essential practical skills for group work. Participants explored a range of play therapy techniques, including reflective listening, limit-setting, and the purposeful use of play materials to support children’s emotional and social development. These skills are especially important in group settings, where facilitators must balance the flow of activities with children’s responses, while remaining attentive to group dynamics.
The online course also examined how Play Therapy principles can be applied in real-life group work contexts. Participants reflected on how to translate theory into practice by designing and facilitating activities that encourage self-expression, cooperation, emotional awareness, and positive interaction among children. The session included discussion, role-play, and reflection, allowing participants to consider real-world scenarios and think about how to respond to children’s behaviours and needs with patience and empathy.
This training reflects Project SOAR’s core mission: to prepare group facilitators who are knowledgeable, practical, and responsive. Through the integration of theory, skills, and application, the Train the Trainer Program continues to equip participants to serve children and families with care, professionalism, and compassion.
